Dianna Russini resigned from The Athletic over a photo scandal involving NFL coach Mike Vrabel. Jon Weiner, host of a popular podcast, has left his job offer open indefinitely since her departure.
Russini’s resignation followed the emergence of photos showing her and Vrabel together at a hotel in Arizona. The incident raised questions about professionalism and ethics in sports journalism. Jon Weiner stated, “I did say if The Athletic fired her, I would hire her. They didn’t fire her. She stepped down from The Athletic, and the offer holds forever.”
Russini has over ten years of experience covering the NFL. She previously worked for ESPN before joining The Athletic in 2023. Following the scandal, she deleted her X account and made her Instagram profile private.
Mike Vrabel acknowledged the situation, stating, “These photos show a completely innocent interaction and any suggestion otherwise is laughable.” He admitted to having “difficult conversations” with his family regarding the incident.
The NFL concluded its inquiry into the matter, confirming it was a “personal matter” that did not violate the league’s personal conduct policy. Despite the controversy, Vrabel’s position as head coach of the Patriots remains secure.
Jon Weiner expressed support for Russini during this challenging time, saying, “I am simply saying, it’s her story to tell, it’s not my story, and I am simply going to support my friend.” Russini affirmed her commitment to professionalism in journalism, stating, “I have covered the NFL with professionalism and dedication throughout my career, and I stand behind every story I have ever published.”
