This rule, part of the Protect College Sports Act, aims to prevent college coaches from changing schools while the season is still in progress. Kiffin expressed support for the rule, stating that he hopes it will prevent future coaches from being placed in similar situations, drawing a comparison to the calendar and movement rules in the NFL.
His departure from Ole Miss to sign a seven-year, $91 million contract with LSU at the end of last season led to the rule being named after him. The timing of his move sparked discussions about Mississippi’s prospects in the College Football Playoffs and how the team would be perceived without its coach.
Reflections and personal changes
During his appearance, Kiffin also reflected on past comments made in a Vanity Fair interview, where he discussed the challenges of recruiting players to Oxford compared to Baton Rouge. He acknowledged that his choice of words was a mistake, describing it as a “poor usage of a term.” Kiffin mentioned that he believed the statement was factual, similar to what other coaches might have observed, but that the timing and usage of the word were ill-advised during a lengthy interview.
Kiffin shared a personal decision to step away from social media in May, influenced by his son, Knox. He noted that this change has allowed him to realize how many people are reliant on social media and has opened up a new perspective. He also spoke about the passing of his father, Monte Kiffin, a long-time football coach known for his dozen years coaching defense for the Buccaneers in Tampa, who died two summers ago. Kiffin indicated that these personal reflections have led him to be less concerned about public opinion.
LSU’s future and player opportunities
Kiffin’s move to LSU has generated significant attention, with some observers considering him the most prominent college coach entering the season. Despite not having coached in a College Football Playoff game or won a national championship, his presence has made him a central figure at SEC media days.
He expressed confidence in LSU’s future, highlighting the team’s roster, which he described as a mix of top high school recruits and portal players. Kiffin stated that LSU has a nation-leading 12 players with Nike NIL deals, including linebacker Whit Weeks and transfer offensive lineman Jordan Seaton, who is reportedly the first offensive lineman to secure such a deal. He noted that no other school has more than eight Nike NIL-ers, indicating the program’s appeal to talented players.
Kiffin reiterated his commitment to signing the best players and building a strong team, expressing excitement for fall camp and the future of LSU.
