Sporting Kansas City has acquired Brazilian defender Diego Borges from Zalaegerszeg TE, signing him to a four-and-a-half-year contract that runs through the 2029-2030 season, with an option for 2030-2031. Borges, a 21-year-old center back, will occupy an international spot on the club’s roster.
Borges joins Sporting Kansas City after making seven appearances with Zalaegerszeg, where he showcased his skills in the Hungarian league. Prior to his time in Hungary, he played for the U-20 team of Santos FC and Amazonas FC in Brazil’s Série B, demonstrating a rapid rise in his career.
David Lee, the President of Soccer Operations & General Manager for Sporting Kansas City, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, “We are delighted that Diego has decided to join Sporting KC for the next stage of his career.” He further added, “Diego is a young and exciting prospect at center back who has experienced a quick rise from Serie B in Brazil to showing excellent performances in Hungary.”
As a U22 Initiative player, Borges is expected to develop further under the guidance of Sporting Kansas City, which aims to nurture young talent. Lee remarked, “The U22 Initiative allows us to compete for players of this profile and our role now is to help him continue to develop his potential and contribute to our success.”
This acquisition marks a significant step for Sporting Kansas City as they look to strengthen their defensive lineup. The club’s commitment to integrating young players into their roster aligns with their long-term strategy to build a competitive team in Major League Soccer.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding Borges’ immediate impact on the team and how he will fit into the current squad dynamics. However, expectations are high for the young defender as he embarks on this new chapter in his professional career.
