Enzo Maresca Returns to Manchester City as Head Coach

Chelsea say new Man City boss Enzo Maresca to pay compensation for move

Enzo Maresca has been appointed as the new head coach for Manchester City, marking his return to the club after three years. Maresca, who previously served as Pep Guardiola‘s assistant during City’s Treble-winning 2022-23 campaign, takes over from Guardiola. This appointment highlights the rapid progression of the Italian coach in management, having taken on his first head coach role in 2021.

Maresca now faces the significant challenge of succeeding Guardiola, who secured 20 trophies during his 10 years at City. Maresca has called the job a “huge challenge.” He stated that the goal is to continue winning and achieving important objectives, with the daily work guiding his approach.

Maresca’s Coaching Philosophy and Background

Maresca’s coaching philosophy is influenced by both Italian and Spanish approaches. His exposure to Guardiola’s Barcelona teams during his playing career at Sevilla and Malaga shaped his understanding of technical, possession-based football. This period also led to him meeting his assistant, Willy Caballero, and establishing his family in Spain, where Spanish is now the primary language spoken at home.

His former manager, Manuel Pellegrini, identified Maresca’s potential as a coach during his playing days. This foundation explains the similarities in coaching style between Maresca and Guardiola. Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak noted Maresca’s previous stints with the club, first with the academy and then as an assistant coach, and acknowledged that Maresca has drawn inspiration from Guardiola’s philosophy while also developing his own.

Al Mubarak expressed confidence that fans will appreciate Maresca’s football philosophy and leadership. He highlighted Maresca’s willingness to embrace the challenge of this role. Maresca was an influential figure during his season as Guardiola’s assistant, contributing to tactical innovations, such as the rebranding of John Stones as a central midfielder during the Champions League final win against Inter Milan.

Maresca also left a notable impact during his time as head coach of City’s Elite Development Squad in the 2020-21 season. Gareth Taylor, who worked with Maresca at City, observed that Maresca brought a different approach, allowing more freedom in team setups compared to the strict game models typically followed in that environment. This demonstrated an openness to tactical evolution within the club.

This style aligns with Guardiola’s methods, emphasizing physicality in attack to press high up the pitch.

He also seeks ideas from outside football, engaging with figures like volleyball coach Julio Velasco and basketball coach Ettore Messina. His assistants, Caballero and Danny Walker, are expected to join him at City.

Chelsea’s Statement on Departure and Compensation

Chelsea FC issued a statement regarding the departure of their former head coach. The club acknowledged that the 2025-26 season was a hugely disappointing one for the Club and its supporters. A major contributing factor was the disruption caused as a result of changes that the Club was forced to make to the Head Coach position over the Christmas period. In the autumn of the previous year, the club was informed by their former head coach about a potential opportunity to succeed Guardiola at the end of the season.

Chelsea understood that it was his strong desire to pursue this opportunity, despite being under a long-term contract that he did not have the right to terminate. The club expressed feeling let down, believing his focus had shifted to another club and opportunity, despite having recently joined Chelsea.

Given his decision not to continue his responsibilities through the end of the season, Chelsea accepted his resignation to protect its players and supporters. Additionally, a confidential settlement has been agreed upon with the former head coach, under which he will pay compensation to Chelsea.
