Golden State explores new roster additions
The Golden State Warriors are reportedly exploring significant roster changes, with interest in acquiring Anthony Davis and signing LeBron James. This comes as Draymond Green has declined his player option for the upcoming season, a move that could provide the team with financial flexibility.
According to multiple league sources, the Warriors are attempting to trade for Davis and then sign James, who is a free agent. The strategy involves reuniting James with Davis, and pairing them with current Warriors stars Stephen Curry and Green, under coach Steve Kerr, to pursue another championship.
A potential trade for Davis would likely involve Jimmy Butler, who is currently on an expiring contract and recovering from an injury. The Warriors would also need to include draft capital, possessing two future first-round picks and four first-round swaps. The hope is that adding Davis would help attract James to the Bay Area once free agency officially begins.
James previously won a gold medal with Curry, Davis, and Kerr in 2024 with Team USA, and sources indicate a strong on-court chemistry between James and Curry. While James has not yet received an offer from his current team, reports suggest numerous teams have expressed interest in signing him this summer.
Green’s contract decision and future with the Warriors
Green officially declined his player option, valued at nearly $28 million for the 2026-27 season, making him a free agent. This decision, reported last week, creates flexibility for the Warriors to pursue other players.
Despite declining the option, Green is expected to re-sign with the Warriors for what would be his 15th season. The veteran forward could potentially agree to a longer-term contract with a lower annual salary, further aiding the team’s efforts to accommodate new acquisitions like James or Davis.
Last season, Green averaged 8.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game. While his offensive consistency and rebounding numbers were lower than in previous seasons, his defensive impact and leadership within the locker room remained significant. He played in 68 games last season, despite various injuries affecting other Warriors players.
Green has consistently expressed his desire to remain with Golden State. Following a play-in tournament loss, he stated his commitment to the team, saying, “If the question is, ‘Where do I want to be?’ I think it’s pretty obvious, guys, where the hell I’m going. If they want me here, I’ll be right here.”

Challenges and alternative scenarios
Despite the Warriors’ reported interest, there are doubts about the feasibility of acquiring both James and Davis. The Washington Wizards have indicated an intention to keep Davis, especially after re-signing another key player to a long-term extension. The Wizards general manager stated, “He wants to be here. We want him here.”
Davis is eligible for a significant extension in August. If he were traded, his eligibility for that full maximum deal would be reset, making him ineligible for six months after a new trade becomes official. The Wizards’ recent actions suggest they are focused on winning now, which might make a trade for an injured Butler less appealing.
Butler, who was a significant acquisition for the Warriors, has expressed his desire to remain with the team, calling it the best organization he has played for. However, he also acknowledged the possibility of a trade, stating, “If I get traded, I get traded. Their job is to win.”
The Warriors may also face competition for Davis. One report suggests the Portland Trail Blazers could pursue Davis, possessing tradable salaries and future draft picks that could be attractive in a trade. This could potentially drive up the price if Washington decides to engage in trade discussions for Davis.
The Warriors have made attempts to acquire other star players in recent years, including Paul George, Lauri Markkanen, Pascal Siakam, Kevin Durant, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Kawhi Leonard. The pursuit of Butler occurred after Durant showed no interest in rejoining the team. Free agency officially opens on Tuesday.
