The contract for Mendoza is reportedly a four-year agreement valued at a fully guaranteed $57.27 million. As is customary for first-round selections, Mendoza’s contract includes a fifth-year option. This signing marks his official entry into the Raiders organization, where he is expected to begin learning head coach Klint Kubiak’s offensive system.
Mendoza’s Path to the Raiders
Mendoza arrives in Las Vegas with a notable collegiate background, having been a reigning national champion and Heisman Trophy winner. He is only the third quarterback in the Super Bowl era to achieve both the Heisman and a national title before being selected first overall in the subsequent NFL Draft. This places him in a select group alongside Cam Newton (2011, Carolina Panthers) and Joe Burrow (2020, Cincinnati Bengals).
In the 2025 season, Mendoza led the FBS with 41 touchdown passes, showcasing a strong winning pedigree. The Raiders, coming off a 3-14 season, utilized their second No. 1 overall pick in the Common Draft Era (since 1967) to secure Mendoza. The franchise previously selected LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell as the No. 1 overall pick in 2007.
Contract Negotiations and Team Outlook
Prior to the signing, Mendoza’s contract negotiations faced a delay, primarily centered around the structure of his signing bonus. According to a source familiar with the situation, Mendoza’s representatives sought a single lump sum payment for the signing bonus. This payment method has become a standard practice for recent No. 1 overall picks, with Kyler Murray in 2019 being the last top pick not to receive his signing bonus in a single lump sum.
Conversely, the Raiders’ standard practice involves paying signing bonuses in installments. This difference in approach led to a temporary stalemate, as Mendoza’s side was reportedly opposed to setting a new precedent regarding the payment structure for No. 1 picks. Despite being the top pick, Mendoza is not guaranteed to start the Raiders’ 2026 campaign as the primary quarterback.
